If you are not a young devotee of the current music scene, you may not be aware of the hair trend that calls for wearing a heavy layer of bangs that cover one side of the face. While there is nothing new about trendy hairstyles, some worry that this one could damage vision. The worry is that the eye covered by the heavy layer of fringe may develop amblyopia, commonly referred to as “lazy eye.” This loss of the eye’s ability to see stems from the blurred image that the unstimulated eye sends to the brain. As a result of the confusion presented by one good image and one bad one, the brain elects to ignore the blurred image. A modern, sleek hairstyle is usually harmless, but the recent trend of wearing hair over one eye can actually compromise vision over time. The most common treatment for amblyopia involves placing a patch over the “good” eye in an effort to make the amblyopic eye work harder. In effect, those wearing the trendy lopsided hairstyle mentioned above are reversing this treatment.
