VISION LOSS WITHOUT WARNING

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steals sight without warning and often without symptoms. Vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve, which transfers visual information from the retina to the brain. Although it was once thought that high intraocular pressure (IOP) was the main cause of this optic nerve damage, our knowledge has expanded to include other possible causes. While high IOP is clearly a factor, we now know that even people with “normal” IOP can experience vision loss from glaucoma. This chronic disease must be treated for life. First, however, it must be diagnosed through a thorough and comprehensive eye examination. Otherwise, glaucoma-induced vision loss may occur without a person ever realizing it. Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve – the part of the eye that carries the images we see to the brain.  When damage to the optic nerve fibers occurs, blind spots develop.  Early detection and treatment are the keys to preventing optic nerve damage and blindness from glaucoma. Don’t take clear vision for granted. While older individuals are at higher risk for glaucoma, babies can be born with the eye disease
